Meghalaya: Rajya Sabha MP Dr WR Kharlukhi to retire from politics in 2026

Dr. WR Kharlukhi, Rajya Sabha MP from Meghalaya said that he will retire from politics in 2026 at the end of his current tenure.

Speaking to media persons today, Kharlukhi confirmed that he will not seek re-election to the Rajya Sabha and revealed his plans to focus on writing more books in the near future.

He said that he was president of both the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and the NPP in Meghalaya for 16 years and now he wants to focus on writing books.

“It is time for the next generation to take charge. Young leaders should come forward,” said Kharlukhi.

“Earlier, also, I said that besides being a politician I am also an academician. After I resigned from the post of NPP state president in 2023 to embrace my academic side, I released my first book ‘Political Development in the Jaintia Hills of Meghalaya’ and I am coming up with so many books shortly,” he added.

Kharlukhi was elected as MP to the Rajya Sabha as NPP candidate in 2020 defeating Congress candidate Kennedy C Khriem in the election to the lone Rajya Sabha seat in Meghalaya in 2020.

Kharlukhi polled 39 votes against 19 by Kennedy Khyriem of Congress.

Kharlukhi’s tenure will end in 2026.
