Kumar Waii won from the Bameng Assembly constituency defeating BJP candidate Doba Lamino with a margin of 635 votes.

Congress MLA Kumar Waii is now the only member of the opposition in the 60-member Arunachal Legislative Assembly after three independent MLAs—Laisam Simai, Wanglam Sawin, Tenzin Nima Glow, and two MLAs of the People’s Party of Arunachal (PPA)—Nabam Vivek and Oken Tayeng extended their unqualified support to the Pema Khandu-led BJP government in Arunachal Pradesh.

In the recently concluded Assembly elections in the state, BJP has won a total of 46 seats, the National People’s Party (NPP) won 5, while the Ajit Pawar faction of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) secured 3 seats, PPA won 2 seats, and Congress won one seat. 3 other seats were won by Independent candidates.

With the support of the 3 Independent MLAs, and 2 PPA MLAs, ruling BJP’s strength now stands at 51.

5 MLAs from the NPP are part of North-East Democratic Alliance (NEDA), while the 3 NCP MLAs are part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) at the center. Therefore, Waii is now the only member of the opposition.

It may be mentioned here that State Congress President and former Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh Nabam Tuki was also the lone opposition in 2016 after 43 of the 44 Congress MLAs quit party and joined the (PPA).

Kumar Waii won from the Bameng Assembly constituency defeating BJP candidate Doba Lamino with a margin of 635 votes.
