The Meghalaya government has proposed the Ministry of Home Affairs to undertake afforestation in the affected hills along the stretch from Lumshnong to Ratachera.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has directed state government officials to find immediate and long-term solutions for the NH-6 stretch from Lumshnong to Ratachera, which is frequently affected by landslides and water overflow.
CM Sangma on Saturday held a meeting with the officials of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) and the National Highways & Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) to assess the ongoing problems on the NH-6.
The meeting was also attended by Chief Secretary DP Wahlang, East Jaintia Hills DC Abhilash Baranwal, and other senior government officials.
In the meeting, CM Sangma has directed the officials to come up with an immediate solution to divert the water flow, as well as work on a permanent solution by engaging stakeholders, including the Mining and Geology Department.
CM Sangma said that following the devastating floods, and landslides that have caused substantial damage along the 50 km stretch of NH-6 as well as to the state in 2022, a detailed study has been conducted, and a proposal is ready to be presented to the Ministry of Home Affairs to address and manage the water flow situation.
As part of the proposal, the government is working to manage the water flow from the nearby hills, including strengthening the hills and valleys.
The government also proposed to undertake afforestation in the affected hills along the stretch from Lumshnong to Ratachera.
