Cyclone Remal Affect in Tripura: Electricity poles, transformers worth over Rs 5 cr damaged

At least 314 poles have been repaired or replaced today, with the remaining work expected to be completed by tomorrow.
As Tripura grapples with widespread power outages due to Cyclone Remal, Power Secretary Abhishek Singh on Thursday said that the department has faced a loss of at least Rs 5 crore due to damages to the state’s power infrastructure, including electric poles and transformers.
Singh said that the cyclone snapped approximately 550 kilometers of electric lines besides breaking of over 850 power poles and damaged more than 100 transformers.
He added that in response to the power failures, around 7,300 complaints have been registered, and a rapid restoration operation is in progress with 994 workers actively engaged.
As of today, 314 poles have been repaired or replaced, with the remaining work expected to be completed by tomorrow.
Singh acknowledged the inconvenience caused in certain areas but assured that issues would be resolved soon.
He highlighted that many trees were uprooted across various districts, and the power department, in coordination with the forest department and Tripura State Rifles (TSR), is working to clear them.
To mitigate such incidents in the future, the government has decided to replace overhead power lines with underground cables.
In Agartala, following directions from the Chief Minister and the Power Minister, a project to lay 23 kilometers of underground power lines is currently underway.
These measures aim to enhance the resilience of the power infrastructure and ensure more reliable electricity supply during extreme weather events.
