The Manipur Government has directed all schools (Government Aided, Private and Central schools) in the state to remain closed for 3 days starting today till May 31, 2024.
The decision has been taken in view of the widespread destruction and inconvenience caused to many households and installations across the state due to incessant rain and floods triggered by Cyclone Remal.
An order issued by the Directorate of Education (S) said, “All schools of the state, Government, Government Aided, Private and Central Schools, which are not yet under Summer vacation, will stay closed on the 29″ of May, 2024, 30″ of May, 2024 and the 31″ of May, 2024. During this period, all activities at the schools, including admission process should not be taken up.”
During this period, all activities at schools, including the admission process should not be taken up, it said.
Flash floods have submerged all the streets in the Imphal Valley, leading to water logging in numerous homes. In Imphal East, certain areas along the Imphal River have already crossed the danger levels.
Several rivers are just half a foot away from reaching their danger levels. As per reports, the Nambul river, Manipur River and Kongba River are currently on the brink of over flowing and inundating the region.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister N Biren Singh said that measures have been taken to regulate the rising water level of rivers caused by the heavy rainfall.
“One gate of the Ethai Barrage has been opened for 30 cm. We are closely monitoring the situation, and any further openings will be done in consultation with the Water Resources Department (WRD) and the National Hydroelectric Power Corporation (NHPC). Our official teams are working tirelessly around the clock to manage this situation effectively and ensure the safety of the people,” CM N Biren Singh posted on X.
