Mizoram Stone Quarry Tragedy: Death toll rises to 21, CM Lalduhoma announces ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakhs each to dead

This is the third such incident in three years in Mizoram.

The death toll in the stone quarry tragedy in Mizoram has mounted to 21 and may increase further as rescue operations continue.  

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Lalduhoma has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakhs for each of the deceased in the tragedy.

Names of those dead and bodies recovered are:

6.Dorothy Lalruatkimi (20)

13.Baby Zoremsiami (36)

8 other bodies are yet to be identified.

The incident occurred in Melthum, approximately 20 minutes away from the capital city of Aizawl.

The collapse took place due to a heavy rain-triggered landslide trapping the workers inside the stone quarry.

This is the third such incident in three years in Mizoram.

On December 20, 2023, 7 workers were killed when a stone quarry collapsed in Pukzing village in Mamit district.

In Nov 2022, when the stone quarry at Maudah in Hnahthial district collapsed killing 12 workers.

In the Maudah quarry collapse case, the National Green Tribunal had imposed a Rs 70 crore fine on ABCI Infrastructure, for operating the quarry without environmental clearance.
