The Mizoram Pig Farmers’ Association today burned packets of frozen pork to register their protest
The Mizoram Pig Farmers’ Association today took to the streets of Aizawl against the import and sale of frozen pork in the state.
The Farmers’ Association is blaming the imports for the African Swine Fever (ASF) that has hit the state’s pigs. Close to a 1000 pigs have either died or have been culled because of the outbreak of ASF.
The agitators as a mark of protest, set on fire frozen pork in front of the PIGFED meat house at Khatla in Aizawl.
Speaking to Northeast Live, one of the members of the Association said, “We have come here to protest the import of frozen pork within Mizoram. Many frozen porks have been entering our state. So there is a rise in ASF cases within our state. So this (frozen pork) might be a cause of spread of ASF in our state. Secondly, it impacts our economy. We as the farmer try to improve ourselves, so that we have enough pork in our state, but import of frozen pork creates problems for us.”
Furthermore, the Association appealed for public support stating that their businesses have undergone immense losses since the outbreak of African Swine Fever that devastated the state on April 16, 2021.
At least 631 pigs were killed and another 288 were culled between January and May this year because of the Swine Fever outbreak.
