Nature’s fury: Rain, storms, heatwave wreaks havoc in Northeast India

Northeast India is facing nature’s fury at its worst. If some states like Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura are reeling under a heatwave and hot and humid weather conditions, some states like Mizoram and Arunachal are being lashed by rain and storm damaging homes and crops, uprooting trees and power lines leaving a trail of destruction and devastation rendering many homeless and disrupting rail and road traffic in several parts of the region.
Massive storm and rains lashed South Assam’s Hailakandi damaging houses and uprooting trees.
Train services between Silchar and Guwahati have been disrupted once again following the recent thunderstorms that hit several parts of Barak Valley.
Following the thunderstorms, the Northeast Frontier Railways announced the cancellation of several trains for track safety works.
Among the cancelled trains are Guwahati-Silchar Express, Guwahati-Dullabcherra Express, Dullabcherra-Guwahati Express, Guwahati-Badarpur Tourist Express and Badarpur-Guwahati Tourist Express among others.
Heavy rainfall on Tuesday night caused a landslide in Sonapur area of Meghalaya, leading to a major road blockage when a container truck overturned near the Sonapur Temple, causing significant damage to parts of the structure.
Reports of extreme hot weather condition have come in from Assam, Meghalaya, Sikkim and Tripura.
The Indian Meteorological Department has issued Orange alert in Sikkim due to the prevailing heatwave condition in the Himalayan State.
Amid the rising temperature in Meghalaya, hydration breaks have been introduced for students in schools along with revised school timings.
Earlier, the Tripura government on Sunday extended the school holidays till May 1 due to continued heat wave in the state.
The Met department in its latest bulletin stated that heavy rainfall along with thunderstorms is very likely to continue in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Tripura over the next five days.
Nearly 250 houses were damaged after a thunderstorm struck Tripura’s Unakoti district on Saturday. However, there were no reports of any death or injury.
Moreover, on Saturday, two villages in Mizoram’s Khawzawl district – Tualpui and Vankal witnessed fresh bout of hailstorm where at least 52 houses were damaged in the storm that hit the two villages.
Manipur faced the wrath of a severe storm last week, as strong winds, heavy rainfall, and hailstorm wreaked havoc across various parts of the state. The storm caused extensive damage in both the valley and hill districts, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
