Sikkim Polls 2024: SDF spokesperson arrested over fake opinion poll

Dr. Shiv Kumar Timsina, spokesperson of the Opposition Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in Sikkim has been arrested today over allegations of uploading a fake opinion poll related to the Sikkim Assembly elections scheduled for tomorrow.

He was arrested by the Sadar Police from his residence in Sumbuk late last night following a complaint filed by the ruling Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) accusing him of uploading a fabricated opinion poll on the social media platform Facebook, purportedly misleading voters and undermining the electoral process.

As per inputs, Dr Shiv Kumar Timsina, yesterday uploaded a report in the name of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) which claims that the silent voters are a large factor in this election. The majority of the silent voters favouring SDF in many constituencies.

The report also said that a total of 19,500 respondents have participated in the survey conducted among general voters and service voters between April 9-16, 2024.

After the SKM filed a complaint with the Sadar Police Station, it was found that no such on-ground assessment was carried out by IB.

Further details regarding the investigation and any subsequent legal proceedings against Dr. Timsina are expected to emerge as the case progresses.

Voting for the 32-member Sikkim Assembly and the lone Lok Sabha seat in the state will be held on April 19 and counting will take place on June 2.
