Minister Lyndoh added that the campaign can begin after the Lok Sabha election in the state.

The capital city of Meghalaya, Shillong, a favourite tourist destination, continues grapple with cleanliness issues like littering and dumping of garbage by the roadside.

With the city continuing to contribute to the state’s tourism prowess, the issue of littering and garbage-dumping is becoming a major concern.

In order to combat these issues, the state government, has outlined several strategies and involved social groups and self-help groups (SHGs) as part of the tourism policy to make Shillong clean and litter-free.
Speaking to Northeast Live on the concerns posed by garbage-dumping, Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh said ,”As part of the state’s tourism policy, the government is conscious of linking social groups and self help groups in the state’s tourism ecosystem by which our plan is to invove them and make them proactive stakeholders.”

Minister Lyndoh added that the campaign can begin after the Lok Sabha election in the state.

It is to be mentioned that recently, the Meghalaya state government had launched the ‘My City Campaign’ to tackle the city’s garbage woes. Despite the initiative, the problem continues to exacerbate in the state capital.

As per a 2018 report, the solid waste generated in Greater Shillong Planning Area (GSPA) is 171 metric ton per day (MTD) with waste generation rate at 378 grams per capita per day in Shillong Urban Agglomeration (SUA) area and 278 grams per capita in the areas outside SUA but falling under GSPA.
