LS polls 2024: Rs 37.51 cr worth cash, liquor, drugs, freebies seized as Meghalaya gears up for free and fair voting

Meghalaya Chief Electoral Officer BDR Tiwari has said that all elaborate arrangements are being made to ensure free, fair and transparent election.
The two Lok Sabha seats in the state- Shillong and Tura are going to polls in the first phase on April 19.
Briefing newspersons, CEO Tiwari said that the vigil has been increased to prevent use of money, liquor, cash, freebies by any political party to woo the voters.
In this regard, Tiwari said, before the imposition of model code of conduct, seizure worth Rs 33.45 crore was made and after the MCC came into force, a seizure worth Rs 4.06 crore have been made.
“As per the preparation for the Lok Sabha election 2024, before announcement of MCC we have total seizure worth Rs 33.45 crore and after the announcement of MCC, we have Rs 4.06 crore seizure, the total seizure till date is Rs 37.51 crore, which includes liquor, drugs, cash, freebies etc.”
Moreover, in respect to the inter border issues so we are having around 187 polling stations bordering with Assam and 140 polling stations bordering with the International Border with Bangladesh. We have around 164 polling stations where polling parties have to move through Assam. All these are already being taken up with the Chief Secretaries between Assam and Meghalaya. All the needful arrangements are being ensured for free and smooth elections,” CEO BDR Tiwari said.
Regarding the security angle, the Meghalaya CEO said, “All the central agencies, state agencies are on the job and the needful arrangements for the flying squad, SSTs, VSTs are already been placed, naakas and everything is being monitored and checked regularly.”
