The Communist Party of India (CPI) in Manipur has named its senior member and state unit general secretary of the All India Trade Union Congress (AITUC), Laishram Sotinkumar Singh as its candidate from the Inner Manipur constituency for the ensuing Lok Sabha elections.
Notably, CPI became the first party in strife-torn Manipur to announce candidate for the upcoming elections.
Laishram Sotinkumar Singh hails from Khurai area in Imphal East district. He is currently serving as the Manipur state general secretary of AITUC.
Manipur has two parliamentary seats–Inner Manipur and Outer Manipur.
32 assembly segments of the 60 assembly constituencies of the state, come under the Inner Manipur seat, while the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha constituency, which is an ST reserved seat, has 28 assembly segments.
The CPI has won twice in the Inner Manipur Lok Sabha seat in 1967 and 1980 and once in the Outer Manipur Lok Sabha seat in 1998.
Speaking on the poll preparedness, Singh said that the party has already begun the groundwork in almost all assembly segments covered by the Inner seat. He stated that the CPI has around 5,000 hardcore members in the state, and that they have been carrying out public welfare initiatives and other party-related activities in their various localities, reported Times of India.
Singh said that CPI would soon convene a meeting to finalise its poll strategies, including the date for canvassing and the release of its election manifesto.
The Election Commission of India (ECI) yesterday announced dates for the 2024 Lok Sabha election in Manipur.
In Manipur, 47 assembly segments will go to polls in the first phase on April 19 and 13 assembly segments in the second phase on April 26.
