Meghalaya: Chief Minister’s Research Grant formed to take development in the state to new heights

In a decisive move, the Meghalaya Government has constituted the Chief Minister’s Research Grant (CMRG) for carrying out research and document different aspects related to the land, language and lineage of the indigenous communities in the state.
A 10-member committee has also been formed to pursue the matter. The Committee will be headed by the Commissioner and Secretary, Arts and Culture Department as the Chairperson.
The Deparment of Art and Culture in the Meghalaya Government issued a notification in this regard.

-Professor David R Syiemlieh (Research)- Adviser
-Professor Milton S Sangma (Research)- Adviser
-Dr Charles Reuben Lyngdoh (Academic)- Adviser
-Director, Arts and Culture- Member Secretary
-Professor, NEHU- Member
-Associate Professor, NEHU- Member
-Associate Professor, NEHU Tura campus- Member
-Principal/vice principal of reputed college- Member
The Deparment of Art and Culture in the Meghalaya Government issued a notification in this regard.
The notification further stated, “The CMRG Committee may also co-opt members with specialized knowledge in various disciplines/domain knowledge as and when required, an approved Honorarium/Sitting fees may be suggested for such Co-opted members.”

The Meghalaya Government has also notified about the tasks to be performed by the CMRG Committee.
It includes-
-Inviting applications
-Scrutiny of applications
-Selection of eligible candidates
-Monitoring progress of the research undertaken by the awardees
-Approval of release of funds to awardees
-Review of and approval of the final submissions of the Research projects
Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma shared the information in a post on X and said, “Happy to announce the Chief Minister’s Research Grant (CMRG), which aims to engage and encourage the citizens and scholars of the State of Meghalaya to undertake quality research and documentation in various areas of interest, that concern the State of Meghalaya, with a particular focus on Arts & Culture, heritage studies, and aspects that seek to study, document and further illuminate on all matters and aspects relating to the land, language and lineage of the indigenous communities of Meghalaya and to suggest meaningful and doable solutions to the various issues and emerging challenges confronted by the State, as it seeks to take its rightful place amongst the comity of States within India and also at the international level.”
On March 9, Meghalaya CM Conrad Sangma had for the first time informed that under the leadership of Minister Art and Culture Paul Lyngdoh, the state Government will be starting a programme called CM’s research scholarship programme where Rs 3 lakh per researcher and scholar, and up to 50 researcher every year will be funded by the Government of Meghalaya to do research on the culture, and different historic aspects of the State.
The Chief Minister had also said that a committee will also be formed, where they will screen different applicants who will work hand in hand with the Government to do research.
