LS Polls 2024: AIUDF to field its founder general secretary Dr KM Baharul Islam from Karimganj: Srcs

AIUDF would be fielding party President Badruddin Ajmal from Dhubri for another term and Aminul Islam from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat.

The All India United Democratic Forum (AIUDF) is likely to field the party’s founder general secretary Dr KM Baharul Islam from the Karimganj Lok Sabha seat in Assam for the upcoming Parliamentary elections.

There are two names doing the rounds for the Karimganj seat – the name of Dr Islam and that of Sahabul Islam. Top party sources told Northeast Live that the party is in all likelyhood going to pick Dr Islam for the Karimganj seat to contest against BJP’s Kripanath Mallah who is the sitting MP and has been fielded by the party for another term.

AIUDF would be fielding party President and party strongman Badruddin Ajmal from Dhubri for another term and Aminul Islam from the Nagaon Lok Sabha seat. Aminul Islam is the Dhing MLA. The names would be formally announced either today or tomorrow after the General Council meeting and the Core Committee and Executive Commttee meetings going on in Guwahati today.

Dr Baharul Islam is the former Dean of IIM Kashipur and is currently the Chairperson at the Centre of Excellence in Public Policy and Government, IIM, Kashipur.

He was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Asiatic Society, Great Britain and Ireland in 2020 and since October 2021, he has been working as a Visiting Professor at the London Scholl of Economics.

Dr Islam had fought the Assam Assembly elections in 2006 from Patharkandi but lost by a narrow margin.
