Officials suspect that the elephant succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision with a train the previous night
In a disturbing incident, the lifeless body of an elephant, with one of its teeth missing, was discovered beside the railway tracks on Saturday morning in the Teliamura subdivision of Khowai district, Tripura.
Officials suspect that the elephant succumbed to injuries sustained in a collision with a train the previous night.
Tapan Saha, Forest Beat Officer of Teliamura, stated that they received a phone call informing them about the elephant’s body near the DM Para school area. Upon arrival, they confirmed the tragic incident, estimating the elephant to be of middle age.
The presence of other elephants in the nearby jungle was indicated by the sounds heard by officials during their inspection.
He added that one of the tusks of the deceased elephant was found missing, prompting an ongoing search effort.
This event has reignited concerns about the recurring issue of elephant-human conflict in Teliamura district.
Despite assurances from the Forest Department and Minister Bikash Debbarma, previous efforts to address this issue have yielded little success.
Efforts to tackle the elephant-human conflict were recently highlighted in a conference convened by authorities from Teliamura subdivision under the Khwai district administration.
While the discovery of the missing tusk adds a perplexing aspect to the incident, the broader challenge of mitigating elephant-human conflicts remains a pressing concern for the region.
