Procession in Agartala to celebrate Kokborok Day

A vibrant procession was taken out in the streets of Agartala on the occasion of the 46th Kokborok Day, a celebration in Tripura aimed at recognizing and promoting the tribal language.
The event, organized by the Directorate of Kokborok and Minority Languages, saw the participation of Finance and IT Minister Pranajit Singha Roy, former Tribal Welfare Minister and MLA Rampada Jamatia, along with numerous tribal youths donning their traditional attire and jewelry.
The procession, commenced from Rabindra Satabarshiki Bhavan and went through the capital city, featuring enthusiastic participation from tribal students, colleges, and social organizations.
Minister Singha Roy emphasized the significance of language as the identity of any community, highlighting that 25 percent of Tripura’s population communicate using Kokborok language, making its preservation crucial.
He added that the government is committed to the development of the indigenous population, ensuring their progress on par with others, and is actively working towards preserving their languages and culture.
Although Kokborok attained official language status in 1979, it is yet to receive an official script.
The BJP-led government has formed a three members committee under former MLA Dr Atul Debbarma to study the Kokborak script issue and suggest a solution.
