Meghalaya: VPP to protest tomorrow against govt’s failure to reinstate Lokayukta officials

The opposition Voice of the People Party (VPP) will organise a sit-in-demonstration in front of the Meghalaya Secretariat during office hours tomorrow to protest the failure of the state government in responding to the call to reinstate three sacked Lokayukta officials.
The VPP has also served 3-day ultimatum to the state government to meet their demand.
In a statement, VPP spokesperson Dr Batskhem Myrboh on Wednesday said, “In view of the failure of the Conrad K Sangma-led MDA-II government to respond to the call of the party to re-instate the officials of the office of the Lokayukta, the VPP will organise a sit-in-demonstration in front of the Meghalaya Secretariat beginning on Friday, the January 19, during office hours, i.e., from 10 A.M to 4 P.M. The demonstration would resume on Monday (January 22), if the government fails to give in.”
“The termination of the services of the officials concerned is not only an injustice and insult to them but to the entire state and therefore, it is the duty of every right-thinking citizen to join in the protest and bring down this government to its knees,” the statement added.
VPP has also appealed to all those who will participate in the protest to abstain from any actions that compromise law and order or jeopardize peace and tranquillity.
“If any is involved in any activity that violates law and order, he/she shall be solely responsible for his/her action,” it said.
Meanwhile, following the ultimatum by the VPP to Meghalaya government to reinstate the removed officials of the Lokyukta,
Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong said that VPP should properly read the Meghalaya Lokayukta Act.
The Deputy Chief Minister also informed that the state government had already clarified on the matter.
Tyngsong said it is not fair without reading the act, and that the rules already indicate that the officials of the Lokayukta should be a working officer.
