Near-extinct Red Panda spotted in Sikkim

The elusive animal was spotted on the outskirts of the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary
A team of environmentalists were greeted with a pleasant surprise when they spotted a near-extinct Red Panda near their campsite on the outskirts of the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary in Sikkim today.
The elusive animal is classified as ‘Endangered’ and receives the highest legal protection under the International Union for Conservation of Nature’s Red List and the Indian Wildlife Protection Act of 1972. The Red Panda holds great cultural significance as a symbol of Sikkim and is the state animal. The state is home to the second largest amount of Red Pandas in the country.
Conservation attempts have been ongoing since many years to preserve the unique species by both national and international agencies.
