NPP committed to HNLC peace talks: Ampareen Lyngdoh

NPP leader and Meghalaya Health Minister Ampareen Lyngdoh on Monday said that the National People’s Party (NPP) remains committed to advise the Meghalaya government to proceed with the peace talks with the banned militant outfit Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) despite the group withdrawing from the talks.
Speaking to media, Lyngdoh said, “The NPP remains dedicated to advise the Meghalaya government to go ahead with this crucial peace talk. We understand that there has been certain displeasures and misunderstandings which are yet to be verified. We will wait for the Hon’ble Home Minister to return to office very soon. He will be able to give better insight but we as a party and a government are committed to proceed with peace talks with this particular banned outfit.”
She added, “We would like to see that there is an amicable understanding for long term peace.”
The HNLC on January 3 announced that they would be backing out of peace talks with the Meghalaya and Central government because of alleged government’s apathy towards their demands.
Briefing the media today the HNLC leaders said that there is a ‘trust deficit’ with the government and they will not return to the table unless and until cases against HNLC cadres and leaders are dropped and general amnesty granted.
Sadon Blah, the HNLC representative said, “While we are making a point to the government to withdraw the cases we see that a series of summons have been served to the HNLC leaders, be it the NIA or a magisterial court in Meghalaya. That is the thing that created trust deficit. On the one hand we are saying that we are having a peace talk, on the other hand summon notices are served to the HNLC leaders and cadres. That is how the trust deficit was created.”
“If the cases are not dropped and the general amnesty is not granted, its over I think, this peace process,” Blah added.
